Last fact-checked: October 29, 2026
Current status: Awaiting Stage 1 results — scheduled for November 13, 2026.
You spent weeks preparing your Open Doors application. You completed the entrance test, wrote your motivation letter and uploaded documents. Now you’re waiting to find out whether you can continue.
But what happens if your score is high and you’re not shortlisted? What if you qualify but cannot book your Stage 2 exam? Or your passport details don’t match?
These are problems applicants have raised in previous Open Doors competitions. This guide explains what to do in each situation, based on the official 2026/27 rules.
The most urgent deadline: If you qualify for Stage 2 in the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral (PhD) track, you must register and select an examination slot by November 16, 2026. Qualifying for Stage 2 does not register you automatically.
First, find your situation
| What happened to you? | Your next action |
|---|---|
| I qualified for Stage 2 | Register and select an available examination slot by November 16 |
| My result hasn’t appeared | Check your participant account and the official subject-area list; contact support if results have been released but your status is missing |
| I have a high score but wasn’t shortlisted | Check the official qualification decision, not an unofficial passing-score claim |
| I cannot register for Stage 2 | Report the exact technical problem to official support before the deadline |
| My passport is missing or incorrect | Request official clarification immediately; do not assume alternative identification is accepted |
| I did not qualify | Understand the appeal limitations and prepare a realistic alternative plan |
| I applied for the postdoctoral track | Follow the research video-presentation instructions, not the bachelor’s/master’s/PhD examination-slot process |
You don’t need to read every section. Start with the situation that matches yours.
When will Open Doors Scholarship 2027 Stage 1 results be announced?
The official schedule gives November 13, 2026 as the announcement date.
Results are published in two places:
- Your individual result and qualification status appear in your Open Doors participant account.
- Lists of participants admitted to Stage 2 are published on the relevant subject-area pages.
Official links:
If you see a November or December date from an older article, check which competition year it refers to. The previous 2025/26 cycle followed a different calendar. For this cycle, use the 2026/27 schedule.
Important: As of this article’s last verification on October 29, Stage 1 results had not yet been announced. A scheduled date is not confirmation that the results have been released.
Problem 1: I qualified for Stage 2. What should I do immediately?
If your account confirms that you’ve advanced, your first task is administrative, not academic.
For bachelor’s, master’s and PhD applicants:
- Sign in to your existing Open Doors account.
- Find the Stage 2 registration instructions made available to qualified participants.
- Select your available examination time slot.
- Complete the registration process no later than November 16, 2026.
- Return to your account and verify that your selected session is recorded.
- Read the examination procedures and prepare your identity document and equipment.
The organizers say Stage 2 instructions will be provided by email and through the participant account. Don’t wait for an email if the instructions are already available in your account.
Why is this urgent?
The official FAQ states that applicants who fail to register for Stage 2 on time cannot take the exam. There is no general guarantee of late registration.
What should I check before leaving the portal?
Use this checklist:
- My account confirms that I qualified.
- I have completed Stage 2 registration.
- My examination date and time slot are visible in my account.
- I have read the official examination instructions.
- My passport and account information match.
- I know how to contact official support if there is a problem.
Do not confuse being admitted to Stage 2 with having successfully booked your examination.
Problem 2: My Stage 1 result is missing. Does that mean I’m rejected?
No. A missing result alone does not establish rejection.
First, determine whether the organizers have actually published the results.
If it is before November 13
The scheduled announcement date has not arrived. You can prepare for Stage 2 and check the official schedule for any changes.
If November 13 has arrived
Check your original participant account, including the relevant track and subject area.
Then compare what your account shows with the official subject-area page.
If no decision is visible, do not interpret an empty field, unchanged status or loading error as a rejection.
Try signing out and back in, then checking again.
If the official announcement has been made but your result is still missing, contact the Open Doors Project Office.

Explain what is missing, which track and subject area you applied to, and what your account currently shows.
The organizers recommend attaching evidence of technical problems when possible. If you provide a screenshot, ensure that passwords, passport numbers and unrelated private information are not exposed.
Because Stage 2 registration closes on November 16, do not leave a genuine account problem unresolved until the final day.
Problem 3: My portfolio score is high, but I wasn’t shortlisted. Why?
This is one of the most confusing aspects of Open Doors.
A portfolio score shows how your first-stage work was evaluated. It does not, by itself, establish that you’ve qualified for the next stage.
There is no single official Stage 1 passing score that applies to every subject area and track.
For example, you might read a social media comment saying:
“I scored 65 and qualified, so everyone above 65 will qualify.”
That does not establish a universal threshold.
Portfolio criteria differ across subject areas, and applicants should rely on their official qualification status rather than comparing isolated numbers from unrelated tracks or subjects.
What if my score looks incorrect?
You can review the portfolio information available in your account, but the current official rules state that Stage 1 portfolio evaluation results cannot be appealed.
A request for clarification about a missing result or account error is different from asking the jury to reassess your academic achievements.
If the platform contains a demonstrable technical or personal-data error, contact official support and describe it precisely. Do not expect a technical inquiry to become a portfolio-score appeal.
Problem 4: I qualified, but Stage 2 registration isn’t working
A student may receive a positive result but encounter a broken registration page, unavailable time slot or unclear confirmation.
The correct response is to document the problem and contact the organizers promptly.
Start with these checks
Is Stage 2 registration available in your account?
The organizers state that detailed instructions are made available after Stage 1. Look for the instructions corresponding to your track.
Are you looking at the correct subject area?
If you submitted portfolios in multiple subject areas, check each relevant examination schedule separately.
Did you complete registration, or only view the available slots?
Viewing the calendar is not necessarily the same as successfully registering. Look for the actual confirmation in your account.
Does the portal display an error?
Record the error message and when it happened. If appropriate, preserve evidence of the registration problem outside the examination session.
Use the official feedback form or the Project Office email. Provide enough information for support to identify your case, but never send your account password.

Subject: Open Doors 2026/27 — Unable to Complete Stage 2 Registration
Dear Open Doors Support Team,
I have been admitted to Stage 2 of the Open Doors Russian Scholarship Project 2026/27, but I am experiencing a problem with the Stage 2 registration process.
My participation details are:
- Track: [Bachelor’s / Master’s / PhD]
- Subject area: [Your subject area]
- Account email: [Registered email]
- Problem: [Describe the exact error]
- Date and time encountered: [Include time zone]
I have checked the instructions available in my participant account, but the issue remains unresolved.
As the registration deadline is November 16, 2026, I would appreciate your guidance on how to complete registration correctly.
Thank you for your assistance.
Kind regards,
[Your name]
Use this message only when you have a genuine problem. The organizers advise against repeatedly sending the same request through several channels because it can delay support.
Problem 5: I don’t have my passport, or my personal details are incorrect
This is a serious issue because the formal rules require passport-based identification.
Under Rule 27, applicants must upload a scanned copy of the passport they intend to use for identification in Russia by the registration deadline.
The details in the participant account must correspond to that passport. Names must match the passport’s machine-readable zone.
For Stage 2, Rule 35 requires identity verification through a webcam using the passport uploaded during registration.
What if I used the wrong name or passport information?
Do not create a second account to correct the mistake. The rules allow only one account per competition cycle.
Instead, submit a written correction request through official support and attach the supporting evidence requested by the organizers.
The rules allow certain account-detail amendments after the deadline only through a supported written request. They do not guarantee that every requested change will be approved.
Can I use my national ID instead of a passport?
The published Stage 2 rules specify the uploaded passport. They do not establish a general national-ID substitute.
We therefore cannot promise that a national identity card, expired passport or other document will be accepted.
If you have this problem, request written clarification from Open Doors before the identity-verification stage.
What if I have already applied for a new passport?
Explain your circumstances to the organizers, including whether the passport was missing, expired, renewed or entered incorrectly.
Wait for their official instructions. An unofficial social media comment is not sufficient proof that an alternative document will be accepted.
Problem 6: I passed Stage 1, but I don’t know how to prepare for Stage 2
Stage 1 and Stage 2 assess different things.
Stage 1 includes your portfolio, motivation letter, supporting documents and entrance test.
Stage 2 requires subject-specific academic tasks under online proctoring for bachelor’s, master’s and PhD applicants.
The 2026/27 rules provide 180 minutes in total:
- 175 minutes for written-response tasks
- 5 minutes for an oral-response task
The examination is connected to your selected subject area.
A practical preparation plan
First: Open your official subject-area page and review its examination programme and sample tasks.
Second: Identify topics you can answer confidently and topics requiring more preparation.
Third: Practise explaining your academic reasoning clearly, especially for written and oral tasks.
Fourth: Follow the trial-mode instructions to check the proctoring software and equipment. The required stable internet speed is at least 1 Mbit/s.
Fifth: Read the permitted-materials and room requirements in your actual examination instructions. Do not assume that resources allowed during Stage 1 will also be allowed during Stage 2.
We have a separate guide covering the examination format, technical checks, proctoring and preparation:
Open Doors Stage 2 Exam: Practical Preparation Guide
You do not need to purchase supposed leaked examination papers or pay an agent for guaranteed questions. Use the official programmes and sample tasks.
Problem 7: I applied in more than one subject area. What if the examination times overlap?
The official FAQ allows participation in multiple subject areas, but it warns that Stage 2 examination dates can coincide.
When the schedules appear:
- Review the examination dates for every subject area in which you qualified.
- Check the actual slots available in your account.
- Identify any conflicts before finalizing your selection.
- If a conflict cannot be resolved through the available options, ask official support whether any authorized alternative exists.
Do not assume that qualifying in two subjects guarantees two non-overlapping examination opportunities.
Problem 8: I wasn’t selected for Stage 2. What should I do now?
First, confirm the actual outcome using your account and the official subject-area list.
If you were not admitted, remember that Stage 1 portfolio scores are not appealable under the current rules.
However, this does not prevent you from considering other educational opportunities.
A useful next step is to separate what you can improve from what you cannot control.
Ask yourself:
- Was my chosen subject area closely connected to my academic background?
- Did I include relevant evidence rather than unrelated certificates?
- Were my academic documents complete and readable?
- Did I describe my scientific or academic interests clearly?
- Which other scholarships match my qualifications and financial circumstances?
You can review our Open Doors Stage 1 Portfolio Guide to understand the requirements for a future cycle.
You can also explore other scholarship opportunities, checking their current deadlines and eligibility before applying.
An unsuccessful Open Doors result does not establish that you are ineligible for other scholarships.
What if I am applying for the postdoctoral track?
Postdoctoral applicants have a different second-stage process.
Rather than taking the same proctored written-and-oral examination as bachelor’s, master’s and PhD applicants, they prepare a video presentation of their research achievements.
The official deadline to upload the presentation is December 6, 2026.
Postdoctoral applicants should follow the video requirements on their subject-area page and the instructions in their participant account.
Do not confuse the postdoctoral video deadline with the November 16 examination-slot registration deadline for other tracks.
Can I appeal my Open Doors result?
It depends on which stage you mean.
| Stage | Appeal rule |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 portfolio evaluation | Not appealable |
| Stage 2 advanced-level written-response task | Eligible score appeals permitted within two days after publication |
| Stage 2 oral response or sanctions for rule violations | Not appealable |
| Postdoctoral Stage 2 video assessment | Not appealable |
| Stage 3 interviews | Final; not appealable |
For an eligible Stage 2 written-task appeal, the participant must identify the precise task and explain the disagreement using the submitted answer.
The outcome may leave the score unchanged, increase it or reduce it.
These Stage 2 appeal rights do not apply to Stage 1 portfolio rejection.
Read the official Rules of Participation before submitting any appeal.
When will Open Doors winners be announced?
Advancing to Stage 2 is not the same as winning.
For the current cycle, the official schedule lists:
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 results | November 13, 2026 |
| Stage 2 registration deadline — bachelor’s, master’s and PhD | November 16, 2026 |
| Postdoctoral Stage 2 video deadline | December 6, 2026 |
| Stage 2 results | December 21, 2026 |
| Bachelor’s and master’s winners and runners-up | December 21, 2026 |
| PhD and postdoctoral final winners | February 26, 2027 |
PhD and postdoctoral applicants have a third stage involving interviews. Bachelor’s and master’s applicants complete their competition through Stage 2.
For later document submission and university procedures, see our Open Doors After Winning Guide.
Final checklist: Before November 16
If you qualify for the bachelor’s, master’s or PhD Stage 2, make sure:
- You have checked your result in the official account.
- You have registered for Stage 2.
- Your examination slot is confirmed.
- Your passport details are correct.
- You have read the examination and proctoring instructions.
- You know which official subject-area sample tasks to study.
- Any unresolved account or registration problem has been reported to official support.
If you haven’t qualified, don’t spend money on unofficial appeal services or guaranteed-selection offers.
If your result is missing, seek clarification rather than guessing.
And if you have qualified, remember that your immediate responsibility is to complete Stage 2 registration correctly and on time.
