Chevening Scholarships are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations. Scholars complete an intensive Master's year, participate in a wider engagement programme, and join an international alumni network. There is no upper age limit and applicants can come from many professional and academic backgrounds.

The scholarship and university admission are separate processes. Listing a course in the Chevening form does not apply to that university. Applicants must submit their Chevening application through the official online system and also complete each university's own admission process in time to secure at least one unconditional offer by the published deadline.

Chevening describes its standard scholarship as fully funded, but applicants should still plan carefully. The award supports the scholar, not accompanying family members. Dependants' flights, visas, accommodation, childcare, and living costs are not automatically covered. University deposits can also create an early cash-flow problem because Chevening states that it does not pay tuition deposits requested to secure an offer.

Monthly stipend rates are reviewed and depend on whether the university is in London. A stipend is intended for reasonable accommodation and living expenses; it should not be treated as a guaranteed surplus. Before accepting, compare local rent, deposits, transport, food, and personal commitments and read the current final award letter and terms rather than relying on amounts quoted by older articles.

Applicants must be citizens of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. Where an award is from an ODA-eligible country, the applicant must also be resident in an ODA-eligible country and show a clear intention to support the country of award. Country pages can contain local information, so eligibility should be checked through the official country or territory page before starting.

You must commit to returning to your country of award for at least two years after the scholarship ends. This is a core condition, not an optional statement to make the application sound persuasive. Career plans should therefore explain how the UK degree, professional relationships, and Chevening network will be used to create credible impact after returning.

You need an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for admission to a UK Master's programme. For the 2027/28 cycle, undergraduate studies must have been completed at least two years before the Chevening application deadline, even if the physical certificate was issued later. The official degree certificate must be available by interview. A previous Master's degree does not by itself prevent an application for another Master's.

British or dual British citizens are generally ineligible, subject to the official exceptions for certain British Overseas Territory citizens and BN(O) applicants from Hong Kong. Other exclusions cover some UK residents, employees and recent former employees of specified organisations and their immediate relatives, and people who previously studied in the UK with a UK government-funded scholarship. Read every current exclusion because personal circumstances can determine eligibility before application quality is considered.

Chevening requires at least 2,800 hours of work experience acquired after completing the undergraduate degree. This is approximately two years of full-time work at 35 hours per week, but the hours may be accumulated across a longer period and more than one role. Experience gained before undergraduate completion should not be counted toward the current requirement.

Eligible experience can include full-time employment, part-time employment, voluntary work, and paid or unpaid internships. The online system permits up to fifteen work periods and calculates hours by multiplying weeks worked by hours per week. Overlapping roles require care: record dates and normal weekly hours truthfully and do not inflate a total by presenting the same working time twice.

Meeting 2,800 hours only clears an eligibility threshold. Competitive strength comes from what the experience demonstrates. Prepare examples showing decisions, initiative, influence, collaboration, measurable outcomes, setbacks, and learning. A long job title list is weaker than a few specific situations in which your actions contributed to a meaningful result.

Keep contracts, experience letters, payslips, volunteer confirmations, or other evidence that may help verify dates and responsibilities. The application asks for detailed work history, and inconsistencies between the form, CV, references, interview answers, or public professional profile can damage credibility.

The Chevening form requires three different eligible Master's courses. They may be related courses at up to three universities or three different courses at one university. Each must normally be UK-based, full-time, start in the autumn term, and lead to a taught Master's qualification. Part-time, distance-learning, PhD, and most postgraduate diploma programmes are not eligible.

Choose courses as part of one career argument. Compare compulsory and optional modules, teaching methods, faculty expertise, practical projects, professional accreditation, industry connections, location, and graduate outcomes. Explain why the content fills a specific knowledge or skills gap and how it supports the work you plan to do after returning home.

Apply separately to universities as early as practical. University decisions, document checks, English tests, references, deposits, and conditions can take months. Successful interview candidates must upload at least one unconditional offer for a listed eligible course by 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST. Chevening does not require applicants to hold an offer when submitting the scholarship form, but waiting until the final months creates avoidable risk.

Check the official Chevening course finder and then confirm details on the university website. Course names, availability, delivery modes, and entry rules can change. Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that their selections qualify, and an ineligible course can be rejected during final checks even if it appeared in an older database or article.

The application asks four essay questions concerning leadership, relationship-building, course choices, and future career goals. Treat them as connected but distinct evidence. Prepare answers in your own words, respect the form's current word limits, and answer the exact prompt rather than recycling a personal statement or describing job duties.

For leadership, select one or two examples with a clear problem, your individual action, the people or decisions you influenced, and the result. Leadership does not require a senior title. It can involve introducing a better process, mobilising a team, resolving resistance, advocating for a community, or turning an idea into an outcome. State what you did using 'I' where appropriate instead of hiding your contribution behind 'we'.

For relationship-building, show how you created and maintained professional connections and used collaboration to achieve something constructive. Name the context, how trust developed, what value you contributed, and how the relationship continued. Then explain how you would participate in the Chevening network rather than treating it only as a source of personal contacts.

The course-choice answer should demonstrate research. Connect particular modules, learning methods, or expertise across the three choices to the same development need and career direction. Avoid generic praise of UK education. The career-plan answer should provide realistic short-, medium-, and long-term steps, likely partners or institutions, intended beneficiaries, barriers, and a credible route from the degree to positive change in the country of award.

Chevening explicitly states that using artificial intelligence to generate essay answers is prohibited. Applicants must submit original work and confirm that they have not used AI to generate their answers. Use official guidance to understand the criteria, but write from your own experience and voice. Fabricated examples, copied templates, paid essays, and AI-generated narratives can lead to disqualification for plagiarism or fraud.

At initial application, candidates provide the details of two referees rather than uploading letters immediately. If shortlisted, they must upload two reference letters no later than seven working days before the interview. Chevening does not contact referees to collect letters on the applicant's behalf, although referees may later be contacted for verification.

Referees may be professional, academic, or one of each. They should know the applicant well enough to discuss relevant qualities and evidence; they cannot simply be a friend or relative. Ask early, share the deadline and guidance, and confirm availability. References must be in English. A reference written in another language must be accompanied by a notarised English translation in the same file.

For education evidence, Chevening's current preparation guidance asks shortlisted applicants for the official undergraduate degree certificate, not an academic transcript as a substitute. Universities may separately request transcripts, translations, English results, or other admission documents, so maintain two checklists: one for Chevening and one for each university.

The entire process lasts roughly a year. Save a copy of the submitted form and confirmation because essay and work-history content cannot normally be edited after submission. The system may log inactive users out, so draft original answers separately, save progress frequently, and submit before the final hours in case of connectivity or time-zone mistakes.

2. Submit the online Chevening application between 4 August and 6 October 2026; the system closes at 11:00 UTC.
3. Apply separately to the three selected universities and work toward unconditional admission.
4. Eligibility sifting begins from October 2026, followed by independent reading committee assessments from mid-October through January 2027.
5. Interview shortlists are expected in mid-February 2027.
6. Interviews take place at British embassies and high commissions during March and April 2027.
7. Shortlisted candidates upload photo ID, degree certificate, and two reference letters at least seven working days before interview.
8. Interview results are expected from mid-June 2027.
9. Successful candidates submit at least one unconditional eligible university offer by 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST.
10. Final award, visa, travel, and university arrangements follow before study begins in September or October 2027.

Interviews are conducted in English by a panel at a British embassy or high commission. Preparation should begin by rereading the submitted application and checking what has changed since submission. Be ready to explain examples, decisions, outcomes, course research, career plans, and the intended contribution to the home country clearly and consistently.

Do not memorise speeches. Practise concise answers that give enough context, identify your own action, and show reflection. Panels can ask follow-up questions about why a particular course is essential, how a plan will be implemented, what obstacles exist, how relationships are maintained, or what was learned when leadership did not produce the expected result.

Bring the perspective of a future scholar, not a scholarship collector. Show that you understand the academic intensity of a one-year Master's, the two-year return commitment, the purpose of the Chevening community, and the practical next steps after study. Honest evidence and a coherent plan are more persuasive than exaggerated claims of changing an entire country alone.

1. Confirm citizenship, residence, education timing, return commitment, employment exclusions, and prior UK funding against official eligibility rules.
2. Calculate at least 2,800 truthful post-degree work hours and document each employment period.
3. Select three eligible autumn-start, full-time, UK-based taught Master's courses that support one coherent goal.
