A fully funded PhD still needs careful budgeting because research expenses vary widely. A desk-based project may have low direct costs, while fieldwork, lab work, surveys, interviews, data purchase, conference travel, transcription, translation, or specialist software can create extra expenses. Check what KNB covers and what requires university approval.
Living allowance timing also matters. Students may need upfront funds for arrival, housing setup, local transport, food, phone, clothing, and emergency needs before the first allowance is fully processed. Bring a modest buffer if possible, even when the scholarship is generous.
Doctoral students should also plan for the final year. Dissertation writing, printing, defense procedures, visa/residence extensions, and return travel can create pressure. Understand the funded duration and ask what happens if research takes longer than expected.
