The Open Doors Doctoral track is an international online competition, not a conventional application in which every complete file receives funding. Applicants compete within a subject area through a portfolio and a proctored task stage. Doctoral candidates who advance also complete interviews with prospective research supervisors.

The award is best described as tuition-free study rather than a complete living-cost scholarship. The official project promotes free tuition and, when required, a preparatory Russian-language year. It does not promise that airfare, accommodation, food, insurance, visa costs, document legalisation, or monthly living expenses will be paid for every winner.

Winners and prize-winners can use the Open Doors result to pursue eligible admission at participating Russian universities under the government quota and without the normal entrance examinations described by the project. The available university and programme choices depend on the selected subject area, track, result status, capacity, and later admission instructions.

Students choosing a Russian-taught degree may receive a tuition-free preparatory Russian-language year when required. English-taught options exist in some subject areas and universities, but applicants should not assume that every programme listed by a university is available in English or available through Open Doors during the same cycle.

Tuition-free status does not eliminate the need for a realistic budget. Before accepting a place, check dormitory charges, food, local transport, medical insurance, visa and migration expenses, document translation and legalisation, winter clothing, travel to Russia, and emergency funds. The host university should confirm whether any separate institutional stipend or dormitory support applies.

The second stage is not a casual questionnaire. Official guidance describes tasks of different types and difficulty completed within a three-hour proctored session. Applicants should study the published subject-area programme and sample tasks, test their camera and internet connection, and read the identification rules before the scheduled session.

1. Create one account on the official Open Doors platform and select the correct academic track.
2. Choose a subject area that matches your previous education and intended degree rather than selecting only by university name.
3. Complete the entrance test and portfolio before the November 1, 2026 deadline; the portfolio cannot be edited after submission closes.
4. Wait for portfolio grading and check the result in the personal account. Only qualifying participants continue.
5. Register for and complete the second-stage tasks during the assigned session under online proctoring. Participation is mandatory for a winning result.
6. If invited to the third stage, choose suitable prospective supervisors and complete the required online research interviews before final doctoral results.
7. After selection, complete the Russian government quota and university admission steps, supply final education documents, and follow visa and enrollment instructions.

The competition portfolio and the later university enrollment file are not necessarily identical. A participant may be allowed to enter the competition with provisional education evidence but still need final diplomas, certified translations, medical documents, and other formal records after winning. Follow the personal-account instructions rather than assuming the initial upload completes admission.

Portfolio quality depends on relevance and evidence. Upload achievements that support the chosen subject area and describe them accurately. Do not inflate participation into an award or submit material that cannot be verified. The automated portfolio estimate can help applicants understand the approximate score, but it is not an official result.

Open Doors does not publish one universal IELTS or TOEFL requirement for every programme. Competition participation is available in Russian and English, while the eventual language of instruction depends on the selected university programme. A university may request proof of language ability during admission even when the competition itself did not require IELTS.

The second-stage task session uses identification and online proctoring. Applicants therefore need a suitable computer, reliable connection, working camera and microphone, quiet room, and an identity document. Attempts to obtain outside help or break the proctoring rules can invalidate the result.

Doctoral applicants face an additional human evaluation. They can schedule interviews with up to three prospective research supervisors whose interests fit their proposed work. The conversation is used to judge subject knowledge, research readiness, fit, and the feasibility of supervision; it is not a faceless or written-only selection.

Open Doors is organised by broad subject areas, while enrollment eventually happens in a specific doctoral programme. Begin with the official subject-area page and read its academic programme, participating universities, degree options, and sample tasks. A university appearing in Open Doors does not mean that every degree offered by that university is available through every subject area.

Choose the subject area that best matches both your qualifying education and the knowledge tested in stage two. Applicants who select an unrelated area because it contains a famous university may struggle to document portfolio relevance or complete the advanced tasks. Compare curricula, programme codes, teaching language, research strengths, location, and later career fit before ranking choices.

For doctoral study, supervisor fit is more important than a general university ranking. Read the prospective supervisor's current research, publications, laboratory resources, and proposed topics. Prepare to explain the research problem you want to study, the methods or knowledge you already possess, and why that supervisor can support the project. A successful interview still requires later agreement on the doctoral specialization and formal enrollment.

A published winner or prize-winner result begins the admission phase; it is not permission to travel immediately. Follow the personal-account instructions for programme selection and the Russian government quota application. The receiving university may request final diplomas, transcripts, certified Russian translations, document legalisation or recognition, medical records, photographs, and passport copies in a prescribed format.

Confirm the immigration process with the university. International students commonly need a university invitation, the correct study visa, valid medical insurance, migration registration after arrival, and medical checks or certificates required by current law. Requirements depend on citizenship and can change, so instructions issued by the university and Russian authorities control this stage.

Ask the university for a written breakdown of costs before accepting. Important questions include whether dormitory space is guaranteed, the monthly dormitory charge, the estimated food and transport budget, when students may arrive, whether a preparatory year is required, and whether any separate institutional stipend is available. Do not rely on the word scholarship as proof that these expenses are paid.

Keep names and document details consistent across Open Doors, quota, university, and visa systems. Differences in transliteration, passport numbers, graduation dates, or programme names can delay processing. Respond quickly to requests, retain copies of every upload and confirmation, and do not resign from work or purchase non-refundable travel until the university confirms admission and visa documentation.
