Before opening the next pages, do one final motivation-letter check. Your letter should not only say that you want a scholarship; it should explain why the Helmut-Schmidt Programme is the right funding route for your public-service direction. If your letter could be used for Erasmus Mundus, Chevening, MEXT or any other scholarship without changing much, it is still too generic.
Read the official course page again after drafting. Add only the course details that genuinely connect to your background. A letter packed with copied module names can feel artificial, but a letter with no course evidence can feel under-researched.
If your first and second choices are both included, check that the ranking is consistent everywhere. The DAAD form, checklist, motivation letter and university upload should not create two different stories. A small inconsistency can make the file look rushed.
Ask one trusted reader to summarize your letter in two sentences. If they cannot identify your public problem, your evidence and your course fit, revise before submission.
Do a final “specificity test” before uploading. Highlight every sentence that could be written by any applicant. If many sentences are generic, replace them with details from your own degree, work, project, country context or course research.
Do not make the letter longer just to sound serious. A focused letter with evidence is better than a long letter with repeated ideas. Every paragraph should do a different job: introduce, prove, connect, explain course fit or show future contribution.
If the official instruction gives a page or word limit, stay inside it. Scholarship readers respect applicants who can follow instructions and communicate clearly.
Keep one saved final version and do not keep editing after submission. If you apply to two courses, save the exact version uploaded for each course so you can answer later questions consistently.
Also keep a copy of the official instruction you followed, because page limits, signature rules and ranking instructions can be checked later during review.
